Hi all, recently my mower has dropped a cylinder (Kohler ch18), I took it apart and tested the coil on the bad cylinder (as well as the running cylinder) and they both tested the same, but I had weak spark in the non running cylinder. I've done a compression check, and have 150 psi on both cylinders. I've cleaned the carb, made sure the airways around the engine are clean, replaced the fuel pump(because I thought the old one looked a little weak while running it into a bottle).
So I ordered and replaced the "bad" Ignition coil with a Kohler genuine replacement. Put it on today, gapped it at .30mm (.012 inches), and it still runs on one cylinder. If I pull the plug wire on the bad cylinder while running, nothing happens. If I pull the good plug wire the mower dies. Just for shits and giggles I replaced the plugs and gapped them to. 30 as per the manual. I've also pulled the valve covers and checked the rocker arms and nothing seems to be loose, and they move as they should. I'm out of ideas at this point. I just want the damn thing to run right again so I can mow my lawn lol. Any help would be much appreciated. |

I should also add that the first 3 cranks when it's starting, it cranks hard now.

Possible....exhaust valve not working on bad cylinder. You said it starts hard.

Wouldn't that show on a compression test? Unless it's stuck closed?
And the rockers seem to be functioning as normal when I pulled the valve covers. |

I still think you have a coil issue. Did you put it back on the way it came off?

I did. The old coil( passenger side) is the cylinder that fires and kills the whole motor when I take the plug boot off the spark plug when running. The (drivers side) has no change when I remove the spark plug boot... And it's the side with the new coil

I do seem to have an intake gaskets leak on the non running cylinder. I sprayed wd40 around all of the intake gaskets and the non running side jumps in rpm when I spray the wd 40 on it. I'm assuming this is my issue?

The worst part is that I checked the intake gaskets before. But then gave the engine a good cleaning, I must have killed whatever little seal the Grime made.

An intake gasket leak can do it.... Better than a valve issue. Report back after you fix it.

Did you check spark on the no workie cylinder?
I.E. laying the plug on the head, connected to the plug wire and cranking it with the starter motor? it should spark properly, if not, you have an electrical problem. ![]() |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
