Sure, just wire it up like a 1950 Chevrolet.

It wouldn't be super difficult, I have a JD 110 that a previous owner wired up in this way .This is a bit different than my 110 because that has battery ignition, and the 3165 has magneto ignition, but I think this should work.
For powering the starter, you'll want to completely ditch the solenoid system and replace it with a new line from the battery, to a push button, and then directly to the starter. For controlling the ignition of the tractor, you'll want to run a ground wire from somewhere on the frame to a toggle switch, and from there to the grounding terminal on the coil(s). When the switch is turned on, this should ground out the coils and shut off the tractor. You could also run the kill wire directly from the negative battery terminal to the toggle switch, and then to the coils.

Why?
You would need to supply +12v power to the carb solenoid and switch ground off to the coils. To start the engine. To stop the engine you need to ground the coils and remove+12v from the solenoid. The keyed ignition switch is the easiest way to accomplish this. A new key is like $5 A new ignition switch is around $20 Niether requires rewiring anything.

Why not go all the way and put in a proximity ignition , that way it would save all the time from either turning a key or pushing a button

You can yes but do be careful.... You have to think about not compromising the safety features such as seat switch, PTO and such.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
