Loose Oil Filler/Dipstick Tube
Subject tube is loose and can be easily removed from my 1450 with K321 engine. See attached photo. I don't see any way the tube was fastened to the block. Was this originally a press-fit that has vibrated over the years to a slip-fit?
What is the recommended fix for this problem? I'm thinking a schmear of JB Weld on the OD of the bottom inch or so of the tube and then a fillet of JB after the tube is slipped into the block. All suggestions/recommendations appreciated. Thanks. |

I'd turn a piece of barstock in the lathe big enough to drive it in the end that has become smaller, swelling it, restoring to become a tight fit again.
(of course it would need driven out of the tube before the tube is re inserted again in the block). might need a couple tries to get the right expanded size. For those that have no lathe or access to one, you might get lucky and find a socket just the right size to use as a tube expander. ----I'm not a big fan of JB plastic goop We used to have to expand driven in oil dip sticks in the small block chevies in the late 50's long before they went to rocker cover fills. Also the fill tubes were driven into the intake manifolds that at times needed re- expanded that way also. just my take, your ideas will vary. |

Hey, George: Thanks for the info and recommendation. So it was a press-fit when fabbed. Don't have a lathe but a lot of deep sockets to choose from. I'll consider that option. No experience with small block Chevys other than wishing I could afford one - I was still pushing my cherry '36 Ford 5-window coupe which I bought for $55 in 1955. Wish I had it now.
