Backfire issue
I inherited an '86 1810. I went and replaced the fuel line, in line filter, the air filter, and the spark plugs. Now it rough idles and backfires. If I half choke it it will idle. I put the old plugs back in and it does the same thing. Any suggestions would be appreciated. It ran fine before I put the new stuff on it.

Did you use the same type of fuel filter? Not all are made for a fuel pump. You may have got dirt in the carb when you changed hoses also.

I did not use the same fuel filter. The reason I changed the fuel line and filter was because the line was cracked and filter looked old. I initially only changed the plugs and it was doing before I did the line and filter.

Using the choke indicates you are running lean.
The fact you "disturbed" the fuel system, it is probable that some crud was induced into the carb. At this point it would be advised to remove the carb. remove the bowl and clean things up making sure the passages are blown clean with your air hose. |

Well back at it again it ran all winter and summer just fine! Last week it started to stumble and you’d have to choke it to get it to run so I pulled the carb all apart cleaned it and blew it out! Now the nightmare it runs but as soon as you touch the throttle the tiniest bit it goes screaming and if you idle it all the way down and pull the choke it idles up also. I counted the turns on the needles when I took them and did nothing but clean it and blow it out I’m ready to just sell it and move on! Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like you have a broken governor gear now.

It could very well be the governor gear is busted. But my thoughts seem to think improper re-assembly since the OP tinkered with the carb.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
