Default How to identify my Kohler??

Hello all.. I have a 782 with a Kohler 17 Series II that I am needing some info on.. I have the ID tag off the engine but the print in worn off on almost all of the model number and maybe some of the serial number. How can I figure out what engine I have? Thanks for any help with this!!

R Bedell, I have another quick question... I have done a lot of searching on the internet for my engine, and I am finding a lot of info on the KT17 but nothing on a KT17S. Do you know what the "S" represents in my model number?

You are lucky, the earlier 782's were series I, and if not properly maintained they suffered an early demise.
But much is written about that as it is history, and it happened to all manufactures that used that engine for power.
It nearly broke Kohler due to warranty issues on the series I.
Deer swore not to ever use a Kohler engine again at the time.

The series II and magnums that followed, were good engines.
But being flathead engines, they were a bit more thirsty and could not meet later emission standards so the design was retired in favor of overhead valve design.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
