General indicator they're a garden tractor, plus that pamphlet.
NOPE. The main criteria is.....if they can handle ground engaging equipment, ie mold board plow, cultivator, etc.

The 2165 and 2185 are listed as garden tractors on tractordata and tractorgearbox websites. All the lower 2000 models are listed as lawn tractors. If they all have the same frame and transmission, then I guess it's just the more HP that gives them the extra umph for ground engaging work? Of course the only difference between a 2165 and a 2155 is one HP.

If if had bought a lower model 2000 because it was advertised as a garden tractor, then blew it up trying to do some ground engaging work, you better believe I'd be raising hell for false advertising and making them cover that under warranty.

I would be more concerned with the accuracy of determining the criteria from Cub Cadet, than a "third party" opinion.

IF..........you really want to know, attach a 10" mold board plow to your 2155, go to a Plow Day Event, plow the afternoon (if it can) and see how long it lasts. If it holds up the entire afternoon, with no damage, then you have a Garden Tractor.

Which is generally determined by whether they're shaft driven or not

The brochures I posted are only a limited range of the HDS2000 series , these are the ones that were available in Australia
The chassis is a very common element in a lot of Cub models , my GT2550 has basically the same chassis as do other models and series
As to whether they are Lawn or Garden tractors ???
My original Cub a HDS2155 was a good piece of gear and is still going strong in the hands of a mate
As to price I paid AUD $5110.00 tax exempt , and that was an exceptional price JD , Toro and other comparable models were way over AUD $6000.00

The 2185 are horizontal crankshaft Kohler command engines with shaft drive transmissions. The 2185 is quite comparable to the current xt3. My 2185 has 23x9.5 - 12 rear tires, same as the late 3000 series and xt3. I consider the 2185 as entry garden tractor. Maybe 2165. Below that, probably not.

I've been reading on other tractor sites and older posts on here, and it seems the 2000 series was kinda odd in the fact that it had a horizontal shaft drive and BDU-10 Hydro, yet was on a lawn tractor frame. It seems the 2000 and 3000 series were the last of the "good" Cub Cadet tractors before MTD started making all their brands the same with different logos on the stickers.

The only modern CC you can get with a horizontal shaft drive now is the XT3, which also has a BDU-10 Hydro. It seems the old big frame garden tractors are a thing of the past. Go figure...

With steel prices, you can't really knock them. If you want to spend $15k, you'd be better off with a CUT.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
