Default B&S 16 hp engine replacement, go 18? or 22?

I have a 1641 with a 16HP B&S engine # 303447-1147. I got this for almost nothing as it had been left out and water was in the cylinders. It was also blowing oil all over the place. I am thinking of replacing the engine instead of rebuilting. Has anyone replace with the higher HP engines like the 18 or 22 HP ones? does more power cause any issues with the hydraulic dive train? Can't think it would have any effect on the PTO mowing deck.

I have mow about 4 acres in a mountain cove bottom that is wet with springs I think I am going to really like this tractor after so many years of diposible riding lawn mowers. So I want this to last.

No problem going to the higher HP engines.

I would minimally recommend a Kohler Magnum 18/20, or the later V twin Command. Properly cared for they will last for decades. Not a fan of anything larger Briggs..

The opposed twin I/Cs are pretty good engines. Same for the ones you might find in a Craftsman.

Pretty sure the 1641 has a Vanguard engine.
One of the better briggs engines.
I do prefer the kohler commands myself but the Vanguard is a great smooth running engine when it's right.

Agreed and correct. Just keep them clean b/c the valve guides drift if they overheat (shouldn't have to say that, but I do).

Going with a larger Vanguard is a plug and play swap, anything else will require a muffler, a drive shaft, a muffler heat shield and some rewiring. Vanguards are great engines. The last 1641was built in 1997 so this one is at least 25 years old. I'd say that's pretty reliable.
