I got the new front axle installed. It was a bit challenging to get the old fractured axle out when the front of the tractor was collapsed to the ground. Of course this was made worse as the failure took place at the edge of the road ditch.

I used the three point hitch on my John Deere 2025R to raise the front end but that made it difficult to remove front quick attach mower bracket. I eventually was able to catch enough of the front frame and still allow the bracket to come free.

Getting the pivot bolt free was actually pretty easy and I was able to lift the new axle in to place with the help of a hydraulic jack. From there the project move rather quickly.

I think replacing the axle in my garage with the mower and quick attach bracket removed would be a pretty easy task.

So it's done and it steers just fine so I am pretty happy. It was getting late and darkness was approaching so I deferred attaching the bracket and mower to a later date.

Wow, that's bad luck, I've run a loader on mine for years and never gave the front axle a second thought. Can you post a picture of the broken ends? Was there a flaw in the casting (gas holes or voids)? Good to see you got her fixed.

I thought I would post an update on my 1862 front axle failure.

So I got the replacement axle in a month ago but ran out of time to install the 50c mower. That was my project this morning. When finished I noticed that the front of the mower was lifting an inch or so higher than the rear. This was not the case with the old axle.

Two years ago I was planning on a project to install power steering on my 782. Since I have the smaller front pto pulley on the 782 and wanted to keep the 44C deck I wanted the axle out of an 1862 or early cyclops version with the slightly lower front. I think I may have gotten an axle from an 1864 or later version as when I look at it now it seems "taller." That sounds like a reasonable explanation for the mower deck riding higher in the front.

When I installed the replacement axle I didn't stand them up side by side and the old fractured axle is 240 miles away.

So, the question is, can I lower the front of the mower with the adjustment bolt enough to the make the 50C cut reasonable level? I have to go looking for a box end wrench as my tool supply in Wisconsin is somewhat limited. It appears that the adjustment nut is 15/16". Do you folks know if that is correct?

Sounds like your replacement is a super steer front axle.

Use your original spindles on the new axle casting and the drag link from the SS axle. It'll give you a low profile supersteer.
