Default 682 with Deck and Tiller

I may go look at a 682 and I'm just wondering, first of all, if it's a good machine overall. Is the design user friendly? Are there any outstanding mechanical issues particular to this unit? High maintenance areas? What should I look for as far as trouble spots. The deck is lifted electrically and he says the tiller is a "screw lift" There are no side panels, but I think that is common.

Not sure about any hydraulics on the machine.

It's a 400 mile drive to pick it up, but I can combine that with some family visiting, so no big deal. It's just that I can't it see in person unless I go.

Cool

It appear to be an IH built machine, so it will have a cast iron rear. The original engine would have been a Series I KT17, which is marginal at best. Many were replaced with a better Series II. I find the 82 series to be one of the best IH sold overall. They are easy to work on, they are mostly steel/metal construction, and strong. Parts are easy to find, but many think they are made from platinum. Originally the 682 had a long manual lift lever for the implements. Optional was a spring lift assist. The only hydraulics on a stock 682 was the transaxle hydro unit, which is the unported variety.

Yes, unfortunately. I would rec'd finding side panels, they should have them for operation (airflow/ducting, among other things).

The deck appears to be a cobble job of maybe two MTD decks. The original lift system was non hydraulic AND non electric...a time proven manual lift. Unless it is very cheap, I would not consider this particular rig.

Make sure you get the front mule drive for the tiller and the long belt.
That belt will set you back more than you want to spend if it is missing are badly worn.
Also looks like the rear pulley guard is missing.
Myself, I'd look for s 1650 or a 1450 as they came standard with hydraulic lift
Good luck!

Or a 782

To be fair, the default engine isn't great, but if they've lasted this long

Personal preference, but would never get a Quietline over an 82 series. Not a fan of the K361 or the Iso-mounts on those.

The seller sent a video of the tractor running and one of the tiller running. That's not to say that the tiller belt and pulleys are in good shape. I don't need a mower. Being non-ported is a big deficit.

I will heed the advice the Experts have offered and pass on this tractor. Cubs are rare and expensive here in the north west of Canada. A good, complete runner can sell between $1,000 to $2,500.

Thanks Guys and Gal !!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
