Need help resurfacing Koehler cylinder head
Hello everyone. So far I’ve invested just over an hour in resurfacing the cylinder head off of my IH Cub Cadet 70 with the Koehler 7hp gas engine. The first 30-40 minutes were making progress but it kinda stopped working after that. I placed a flat sheet of glass on my table and then used 320 grit Wet/Dry sandpaper. The picture below is of what the cylinder head looks like now. Is this ok or do I have to try harder? The guy in the YouTube video I watched had one done in 25 minutes. Any help is appreciated and Merry Christmas!

Sometimes an hour is just getting warmed up. You will get there, looks
like your on the right track. Change paper more often then you think you need to and it will move along a little faster. Ken |

Make sure to use an authentic Kohler "fire ring" gasket as well.
By the looks of that head, it does not look like that is what was on there to begin with as there is no evidence of the "fire ring" outline etched into it. |

Fire ring gasket?
Could you explain this to me further? I have never heard of a fire ring gasket… Below is a link to what I bought.

I don't have first hand experience with the fire ring gasket. However I
have replaced a few head gaskets on these Kohlers with no problem with the regular gasket. That said, I always run it for an hour or so and then retorque the head bolts in the proper sequence, they will be loosened up. I then do it again after a few hours. Any time I am doing something that allows me access to the head I check them and tighten. I have never had one that I stay on top of blow. But, everyone I have taken apart that someone else ran. The head gaskets have been blown. It it obviously an issue that has to be dealt with. Whether the fire ring allows you to not keep up on them I don't know. Ken |

Need help resurfacing Kohler cylinder head
I'd start with something coarser than 320. Try 150 - 180 grit, and when the head is almost completely flat, move onto the 320.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
