The perforated steel grille insert has been cut out, painted and bolted to the grille shell. I know this early design grille was recalled due to debris clogging the grill, but I like the looks of it. I won't be mowing too much with it, and it will stay clean. Also, here is the material I started with. Was just enough to do this grille and the grille on my 1282.

The upper steering column bushing was worn, so I went with a wheel bearing from a much earlier Cub Cadet with the 3/4" front spindles. IH 384881 R94

Does it seem to steer easier with this bearing in place?

To be honest, it doesn't feel much different in terms of effort, but it is nice and tight without wobble. This will last far longer than the bushing.

Now take the steering wheel back off, and install a tie rod boot on the shaft of appropriate size to fit tightly on the shaft, and umbrella the bearing to shed water/debris off it
------unless you promise yerself, yall will not ever get water/dirt in the bearing |

Haha
It's fully greased and that foam "seal" was replaced. This one shouldn't get wet often. The tie rod boot is a great idea.

The presumably original throw-out bearing decided to take a dump, so out came the driveshaft/clutch. The clutch disc was practically brand new, so only a new OEM 703-0600 bearing/sleeve, and 732-3017 teaser spring were installed. Now, the clutch is quiet again. The only issue is that the bearing was made in Chyna, but it was physically larger than the one I removed.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
