Here's one for ya, my tractor stopped running
The wife had complained about the LT1042 quitting, and not start. I had to fix the wires for the PTO, before I go to that. So, I get the PTO taken care of, and went for a test run. Never make a test run away from your house. Know what I mean.
Anyway, I get about two acres away, and it started running really bad and then dies. Like no gas, but it also refused to turn over. So I may have a couple issues, but running out of gas (*possibly the pump?) but the fact that it won't even attempt to turtn over, has got me really puzzled. Good battery and starts any other time. Sooooo, now what? Not sure where to start looking. Any good idea's? |

Well if won't turn over I would go to the source of the power. Are you
100% sure the battery is good and that all the connections to it are good? Clean and tight. If you have no power to the starter that's the place to start. Somewhere between key and starter there is no power. Ken |

Okay, so to be on the safe side and not having a way to really test the battery, I purchased a new 230 ranking amp battery and it is doing the same thing. It will not turn the engine over like it should. Not fast enough to start. So I pulled the spark plug and it spins great. Put the plug back in and nothing. So I'm beginning to think that the starter is no good. I checked the brushes and they look okay, but that's about all I can do.

So are you saying that with the old battery it would not turn over and
with the new battery it does turn over? And the starter works fine unless you have compression, spark plug in? Ken |

No,neither battery is working. So, I'm thinking starter. It will spin the engine if I take the spark plug out. Put it back in and it tries but just don't turn fast enough to start.

You might consider checking your valve/rocker arm clearances...

I did just that. I tried to turn it over by hand and it was not interested. So I pulled the valve cover and seen that the exhaust rocker was really sloppy. After finding the adjuster had a very small Torx set screw in the middle, I got the clearances adjusted on both vales. Engine didn't do a full revolution and it started as it was meant to do. Took me a minute or two to figure it out, but it's ready to go to work. Thanks for everyone's help.
