Default 1862 mule drive belt size

Hello All. Anyone using an 1862 with a 44" deck? I need a new belt. One I took off had 5/8 x 90" Book says 5/8 x 89" My 1862 has a 6" front drive pulley. Would this require a 90" belt? Thanks in advance for all help.

To properly answer this question, the assumption here is that your 1862 Cub Cadet was produced in serial number range 821060 - 836000.

So, if your 1862 has the correct recommended model 318 44" deck with the 6" PTO pulley size and 5 1/8" (756-3055) deck drive pulley size, the sources say to use the Cub Cadet part number 754-3023 B-Section X 93.7" long - now superseded to part number 954-3023.

If you are running the older model 358 44" deck, then your 90" belt would probably fit. The 358 deck has the 4.5" drive pulley (756-3007) to pair up with the 4.5" PTO pulley on the older Cubs.

If you use not recommended mismatched size pulleys, you will either have a very overdriven or under driven deck.

6" PTO pulley coupled with a 4.5" deck drive pulley equals an overdriven deck. (blades spin much faster than rated)
4.5" PTO pulley coupled with a 5 1/8" deck drive pulley equals an under driven deck.(blades do not spin fast enough)

Default 1862 bet

Thank You 1711Cub I could find no markings on the 44" deck other than a 44" label. My Tractor came with a 6" pulley. The pulley on the deck is 41/2". It is a 44" deck as I measured the blades to be sure. I have a 50" deck that I will check the pulley size. Hopefully it will have the larger pulley. Thanks again for all the info and have a great day.

I like the idea of an overdriven deck.

Thumbs up

I have the overdriven setup on one of my tractors- the IH built 582 with a Kohler Command 20 swapped into it. I retained the original to the Command 20 engine 6" PTO, and used the original to the 582 44C deck with the small 4.5" drive pulley. I used a 754-3006 954-3006 belt which is 5/8" / 93".

It cuts fantastic. I'm sure that it goes against ANSI safety standards for that era tractor in terms of blade tip speed, but it definitely works!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
