Series I governor problem
I have a 782 with a series I. Getting it fixed up, put a new carb from isavetractors I had around. I can’t get the governor adjusted. Can only run it on low throttle or it will go into orbit. I feel like I’ve moved the governor every way it can go as well as the throttle linkage cables. I consulted the manual but it was little help on adjusting the governor. I compared the governor position and springs to the magnum 18 in another 782 and still no dice. Not sure what’s going on. Thanks for any help.

If you loosened the governor arm from the shaft you may need to reset the initial adjustment. To do this, loosen the bolt that attaches to the governor arm to the shaft. While holding the governor arm to full open throttle turn the shaft the same direction. Tighten the nut that holds the governor arm to the shaft. If this doesn't work....uh oh! ?

I just went out and readjusted the governor to how you described. That fixed her right up! Thank goodness. Happy day. Thanks for the help

Glad it worked well for you.
In case that had not worked, it is quite common to have a destroyed nylon governor gear inside the engine on these and the later Series II/Magnum 18 and 20 engines. Sometimes when the gear breaks, it does not punch a hole in the block or break the cam in half. To properly fix, the block must be split. I have done it to an otherwise great running Magnum 18, by removing one of the jugs, splitting the block, cleaning all of the nylon bits inside, then reassembling everything. I have used it several times, and it works great now.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
