Cub Cadet 73 mower deck oddity
Greetings all,
I've recently obtained a vintage (1971) Cub Cadet 73 with a 38" deck (SN: 381 U 1113). The tractor is in great condition and I'm game to get it into action. When running it recently I noticed some very noisy spindle bearings so the deck was dropped for inspection and service. The blades were recently renewed and appear in good condition but there is one thing that puzzles me. The blades are not in the same cutting plane. The right most blade is offset lower than the other ones and would cut a swath a full 1" deeper. I wonder if a previous owner unknowingly installed the wrong spindle intended for another model. From the wear, it's been used like this for some time. Surely this isn't standard issue. Marc |

Thanks
I appreciate the reply, thought I had an unusual design for a moment. Now if I can just find the right parts that will be great.

short spindle deck #381 U 1113
Thank you Roland for the link to the mower parts list. My Cub 73 by serial number (385058R) appears to be of 1971 manufacture. The parts listing for the 1971 to 74 38" deck is hopefully correct for my tractor though the U1113 series is not specifically noted. After some preliminary research I have yet to find short spindle units to fit my deck. I would appreciate any suggestion you might offer. Getting the right shaft length and correct housings from salvage would be a perfect solution.

The model of your deck is: 381 U 1113 Of the 38" (3 Blade) design, it is the third generation of that series, with 1111 being the first, 1112 being the second, and so on.

Thank you sir for your replies. On further study of the link you supplied I found that the 38" 3 blade deck that I have is in fact from the late sixties series of units. The blade spindles are very similar in design to a small trailer wheel hub. I was able to cross reference a serial number on the spindle housing to the drawings in the mower deck link. Cub Cadet has just what I need. Your assistance is much appreciated.

Mark,
Hi I have a model 72 with a 381U-1112, 3 blade deck; have you replaced the blades, if so where did you get them? Thanks, Joe |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
