82 series electrical help
Actually its a 1512 (=782D, 882). PTO switched off while mowing and wouldn't reengage. Ran fine otherwise. After parking it and letting it sit for a few weeks, just went out to restart and have no power whatsoever. When trying to warm up glow plugs I get nothing - no fuel pump, oil pressure light or glow plug indicator. Topped off battery and tried jumping from truck but still no juice at all.
The ignition switch was replaced with OEM earlier this summer. Connections all look good - its always been garaged. Figured bad PTO switch shouldn't effect warm-up and starting circuits. Would brake switch do that? Looks like PO bent the reverse cutout switch contact so reverse lever doesn't activate it. Circuit breaker? Voltage regulator? Thanks for any suggestions! |

Circuit breaker is more like a fuse on these. See if there's power at the key switch, then see where it stops. I'm guessing there isn't and the fuse in the dash let loose. Is there power to the amp gauge?

A little more info: just checked the PTO and the gaps are a bit over spec. Wondering if the increased current needed to engage the PTO tripped the breaker? If that happened the engine would have continued running until I shut it off, correct?

There was nothing showing on ammeter when I tried the glow plugs or tried cranking, so I suspect you're right. Won't be able to get back to check current for a couple of days. I might try bypassing the breaker to verify.

My 1572 did a similar thing. It was corrosion on the studs of the breaker. The battery lives above a lot of electrical components so it only a matter of time before the corrosion finds its way to a connection.

Check the fuses. I had a similar issue and found the fuse was fine looking thru the glass but was bad when I checked it with a multi-meter.

Went to replace the ~37 yr old circuit breaker and found one of the nuts was loose. Pulled the wires and clamped them together and viola! - I had power again! Guessing that caused the PTO to cut out and everything else is fine, but its dark now so I'll fire it up tomorrow to confirm. I love it when problems have simple fixes. At least I'll have a new circuit breaker, properly adjusted PTO gap and increased knowledge of how this machine works! Thanks for all the tips.
