Kohler M12 in narrow frame

Hello!

I may try to Frankenstein a Kohler m12 in a narrow frame cub that has a dead k241. I just have a few questions and always up for suggestions. So my understanding is the largest K series motor that will fit in a narrow frame without frame mods is a K301. The magnum 12 is basically just a new version of a K301 with electronic ignition, geared starter, plastic flywheel fan etc.

The k301 flywheel as long as I understand will fit fine with a narrow frame,
But the magnum 12 won’t? Am I correct? I plan on using the existing starter / generator from the k241

If I use a K301 or a K241 flywheel on the m12 how can I set up the ignition. K241 is points and condenser, and I think the m12 doesn’t have the provisions to put points on it, no hole for the plunger.

I have no problem making it a narrow base motor and installing a cub oil pan / shortening the oil dipper for clearance depending on the type of pan. Also adding metal to the 2 cutouts so it doesn’t leak oil.

Sounds like you have it figured out already. Do you have the motor? You can check for fitment and go from there. I put a motor out of a 1200 in a narrow frame so it is possible.

I’m actually picking the motor up this weekend. One of those deals that is just 2 good to pass up. It’s a complete motor minus the carburetor. It turns over fine and I was told it was removed from a WH with a bad hydro. I plan on doing a compression test before I get 2 deep into anything with it.

Just a quick look on the side of the Magnum 12 were the points would be on a K241/301,I don’t see any provisions for the points such as the plunger to move the points. So I’m guessing you are running the electronic ignition that came on the magnum, are you also running a magnum flywheel with the starter ring gear or one of the other Kohler flywheels by chance?

Hopefully I have a chance this weekend to start figuring out some of the things for the project!

The motor I put in came out of a 1200, so there is points coil setup. Magnums do not have this so you have to retain the setup on that. More than likely you will have to cut the frame to make it fit. Alignment issues with the drive shaft due to height of the oil pan, and the PTO end of the crank may not be correct, and some specs may not have the bolt holes drilled for a s/g bracket.
Why not just rebuild the original motor?

I put a Mag 12 in a 71 but I did the cut and weld routine on it.
