Default What should the idle & high speed RPM's be?

I have to replace my carburetor hopefully today if it is delivered in time. I have been looking all over for what the idle and high-speed rpms should be set to. All I've found was information stating 1200 RPM for low idle but the service manual just states "recommended RPM is 3300 for most engines. Actual RPM depends on the application" and "refer to equipment manufacturer's instructions". So, I went to kholerengines.com and found nothing. I would think there is a recommendation for my specific model.

And what is a decent tachometer to use?

It's a Kholer 597 cc engine single stroke 18 HP if that's what you're asking in a XT1 LT42 SV541-3212 as shown in my signature. Since this is the Kholer Engines forum maybe you are asking for something else?

Just to help:
It is most assuredly a 4 stroke engine as that is what they are building now a days, as 2 stroke engines just can't comply with environmental requirements.
Possibly you meant to say it was a single cylinder?

As far as engine rpm's, 1200 idle is about right for most engines,
and 3300 working to 3600 no load, is in the ball park.
Any tack you have as long as you can set it for number of cylinders and how many times it fires per revolution, will work.

An old school mechanical tack that is hand held, and inserted into the end of the crankshaft center drilled hole, will tell the rpms as well.

Ch-na provides many inexpensive induction type with digital readout tacks, near $10 on the internet places like ebay, if you don't have one now.

Do keep your OEM carb as it is assuredly better than the junk available from off shore manufactures sold by Amazon or other internet sites.
Most times the original just needs a cleaning of the debris in the bowl or passages.
And If one is careful the gaskets can be reused.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
