K321, Two More Questions.
I fired up the 149 today to do the carb, Hi/Lo rpm, and hydro neutral.
At 1,600 rpm the thing shakes like a Labrador coming out of the water, but at 1,400 its as smooth as a puppies belly so that's where it will stay. Top end is set at 3,200 for now, I seldom run it above 3,000 anyway. I don't mow with it. The questions: The manual for the 149 says three pints of motor oil. That puts me right on the "ADD" mark. It will probably take another two pints to come to the halfway mark. Too much oil is not good in a dipper splash system but too little is not good in anything. I do have the dipper on the rod cap. Does any body know for sure what the capacity is? Question #2. My carb is a Walbro WHG. According to the pics in the manual, my high speed mixture screw should be right on top and the low speed near the block at an angle. I'm guessing my high speed is down low (in the pic) The manual says start at one turn out for the low and two turns out for the high. But since I don't have the same carb they're talking about, I'm not sure. Another manual I found online doesn't even give a start point just "to be determined". Neither screw has much affect over a wide range of adjustment until it gets real lean, then it quickly pops and almost dies. I suspect my throttle plate shaft is loose, so that may be the problem on the idle circuit. Not sure what's going on with the high speed circuit. Any enlightenment would be appreciated. Thanks! I’ll just go by the dip stick as I’ve been doing, then.
And that is my carb in the chart in those instructions, so I'll go with those settings for the K321. Sometimes I feel pretty simple when people that know what they're doing make it look so simple. Thanks again ironman! |

For interest’s sake. The engine took 1 1/3 US quarts of oil to put it at the top mark. It was completely empty as I had the pan off. What I don’t know is where the crank is on the it’s throw. If I remember, I’ll check that to see if it displaces any oil.

You can't go by the Kohler manual because manufacturers sometimes used different oil pans (larger or smaller). You should follow the operators manual. Drain crankcase completely, put in what operators manual says, look at dipstick and use that level for the full mark. Could be someone has installed a wrong or a repaired dipstick.
