I use U1 lawn and garden batteries from Walmart in my 1641 and 1863. They might not work as well in the north but do alright in GA.

Battery
The 26R battery is the right size with the top terminals reversed for proper orientation (negative closest to firewall and terminals on the left side). You can get a 525 cca battery at Walmart or Runnings for about $80.
Car batteries make good replacements if the right size. If it poops out in a tractor, it’s not as much of a problem as with a car.. If you use a trickle charger when the tractor is not being used, your battery will last a long time. I had one last for nearly 20 years because I religiously looked after it. Be sure to use a battery tray and secure the battery with the clamp on the bottom to avoid leakage. Use a maintenance free type battery. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
