Default D600 starting issues

I’m working on trying to get my diesel Cub to start with no success. It acts like it wants to run for about 5 seconds and puffs white smoke and dies. Any suggestions in what to look for is greatly appreciated.

I have fuel to the injectors. Being white smoke, it would lead me to believe it is a head gasket issue, but there isn’t any water in the oil.

Are you sure your glow plugs are working and how long are you energizing them before you try to start it?

You may need to do a compression test. Have you adjusted the valves?

Have you done the diesel upgrades yet? They make a huge difference in starting them.

Glow plug upgrade
Get (3) NGK 2031 (Y-103V) and rewire them using a solenoid. Lots of posts on OCC doing that.

My D640 is to the point you basically need a hot day or boost pack. I bought it that way hoping it only needed a head, but I think the PO overheating it must have messed up the liners/pistons. It has a bunch of blow by.

What I'm getting at is it may be more than a simple head gasket, but a compression test will tell you a lot. A D600 calls for 337psi min, 10% variance max between cylinders.

What gage is needed to do the compression test and where do I get one?

Is your engine turning over pretty fast when starting?

I'm not sure this will work but I wouldn't expect much for $40.

I wonder if your local auto parts store has a loner.

Info here.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
