2145 Selenoid Replacement
This may be basic but started up my 2145 with no problem last week. Took it for a spin and all worked well. Took it to garage from shed to change fluids. Then it wouldn't start! One click from solenoid then dead. Replaced selenoid with aftermarket (china) and upon replacement it engaged upon connecting to battery and without turning the start switch. What did I do wrong? The selenoid engages as soon as I connect the main battery connection to the long stud of solenoid without turning the key switch! Do I have a grounding problem? When connecting battery positive I get sparks also. What is going on? Thanks for relief of my limited knowledge!

I concluded that the bendix came out of brushes of starter when I placed the starter back in the housing therby producing a "short" in the ssytem. Took out the starter and solenoid again. Tore down the starter, realigning the brushes around the bedix shaft, and reassembled. I have never torn down a starter and those brush springs can give you fits! Reinstalled the new solenoid w/starter back in the mower and it started up. I guess the old solenoid was bad.

So I got my 2145 working again with the new aftermarket solenoid...for a week! I think I should have bought a new starter also. Upon starting I could hear the starter try to engage but it made a slow almost dead battery noise. Checked the battery and it has 12.6 volts. Tore the guts out, verified the solenoid was indeed engaging, cleaned up the starter rotor and reassembled. Made improvement but no luck starting.
If anyone has some experience replacing a 2145 (Onan) starter I'd like your opinion. Is it ok just to remove "the guts" of the starter from it's housing? On this model to remove the entire starter with mounting endcap, it appears you have to remove the back blower housing which looks like a lot of work. I just remove the 2 long 8mm bolts of the starter along with the 2 small bolts for the solenoid then pull the units out. I then insert the starter bendix into the end cap and reinstall. Sound ok? Thanis!
