2182 fuel pump burns out
while mowing the lawn my 2182 (gas) died. i found fuel pump went bad. it had voltage but was really hot to touch. i installed replacement and that one went bad within 15 mins,also really hot to touch. Voltage was 12v with key on. i wonder if voltage regulator was pushing out too high voltage when motor is running. i got a second new fuel pump and voltage regulator but wonder if anyone here has other ideas. Can i unplug alternator or will it be damaged with no load?

Do you have a plugged fuel line or shut off valves? Check your voltage with a meter. What are you using for a pump?

most fuel pumps are cooled by the fuel they are pumping. did you check to make sure the upstream filter or the line to the tank is not clogged or partially restricted maybe even within the tank outlet??
did you buy the CC/MTD/Troybilt pump or an amazon pump?

the battery should be a little higher than 12 volts when not running- maybe 12.6 ish. the voltage at the battery should be in the 13's when it is running otherwise its not gonna charge. I would expect if the regulator was bad you would be much higher voltage like above 15v - and destroying the battery, boiling it etc.
