Default 1440 PTO clicks but does not engage

The bearing in the PTO on my 1440 went bad, so I ordered a used PTO off eBay. I put it on, and went to test it and it worked for about 30 seconds then stopped like I shut off the switch. Now with the tractor off, I can hear it click when I flip the switch, but the PTO does not engage with the tractor running. I adjusted the air gap to .017. The PO bypassed the original PTO switch and added another one. Just a simple on off switch with power coming from the battery, so no safety switches. It has worked fine like this for the 2 years I’ve had this tractor so I don’t think that’s the problem. It is getting 12 volts at the pto, and it is grounded. Did I get a bad PTO or what? I can send it back and get a different one, but want some opinions first.

If you have 12 volts at the PTO and it doesn't engage I'd say it's bad.

I've had good luck with these PTO's

Thanks Sam. I’ll send it back and get a different one. I hear a lot of good about those Extreme ones, but I don’t want to spend that much money on this tractor. It’s junk, and to me not worth the work it needs to make it nice. I just want to get another year or two out if it. I’ll try another used one.

If it will help any, recheck your connections at the PTO. While you mentioned you have 12v at the PTO and it is grounded, sometimes the contact/connection points might be comprised (example: dirty, paint on connection surface, etc.) that it's enough to render the PTO inoperable even if it worked for a moment.

Otherwise, just like others say, return the PTO for replacement.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
