1282 Hydrostatic Leak
Hello,
I noticed that some oil accumulating around the back of my transmission cover, I pulled it off and I didn’t see anything that really jumped out at me as being a point of failure. The only place I noticed is the input shaft being a little damp, the top of the trans seems to be more coated in oil though. So my questions are, 1.) is there any other place on these that commonly leaks? 2.) How difficult is this part to replace? I haven’t looked in any parts books/service manuals yet to see how it all comes apart yet. One thing that’s been on my list the past few months is to service the hydro anyway so now is as good a time as any, I’ll pick up a filter while I’m at it. After this issue is fixed I’m planning to pull the deck off and refresh it and repaint it. Thanks!

Looking at your pictures... it seems pretty dry to me. It is normal to have very minor seepage where dirt/grass accumulate around it over long period of time.
You didn't show pictures of oil on your back cover. There's an oil reservoir behind that. Was there wet film or was it simply seepage that dirt/grass accumulated over time? What about oil on floor where you park? If there's just minor seepage , I'm not concern about it. Where there's wet film or drops on floor.... I'd be paying attention. Common areas of leaks are cork gasket and relief valves.

Agree with Billy-O.
Quit looking for monsters hiding under the bed and get started on the deck. |

I think relief valves may be a decent bet, as they do seem to have some oil and accumulation on them.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
