I think you should try one more time. See if you can find a torque spec and use a torque wrench. As you have seen the gear on the spindle and pulley will not hold without getting the flange nut tight.

I greased them like crazy because I have already thought that might be the problem. I am using genuine parts. It isn't always the same one.

Then it's one of 2 things either they are not torqued to spec and loosen allowing the spline to strip or something comes in contact with the blade like a rock causing the blade to stop abruptly and causing the damage

I realize this is an older thread but I had a similar issue with my i1046 and wanted to post how I fixed it.
My i1046 ruined the pulley on the left side spindle. I purchased and installed a new spindle. It took all of 10 minutes to cut the shaft on the new one in half just below the upper nut. At that point I knew something else was causing the problem. What I found is the two idler pulleys pivot on the same shaft and that pivot was rusted still. I pulled it all off, used a Dremel to remove the rust, put it back together and oiled the pivot. It has worked perfectly since then. I did research buying new parts and one of the three involved was no longer available. At that point, I made the decision to clean up the original parts. Hope this helps! |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
