Hydrostatic Problems 2001 AGS series 2000 2140
Ok new to the forum and not sure if this is even in the right category but here is my problem. Tractor was purchased from a dealer with 458 hrs and ran great and was later adapted to pull an eighties model trac vac the kind with a trailor. This worked great for a while until about 500 hrs then the hydrostatic started to be weak going forward but reverse works great. It gradually got slower and slower, as a hydrostatic novice where should I start a new filter and fresh hytran? Is this a simple fix? The dealership in town would not sell me a repair manual for this and the library only had manuals for the nice indestructable older units like the Cub Cadet 100 I replaced this one with. Its not that I am too cheap to take it to the professionals it is just that these kinds of projects in my spare time keep me out of trouble ). So any suggestions and/or links to someone willing to sell me a repair manual for this tractor would be greatly appreciated. Thx in advance.

Hydrostatic problems
Ok apparently their are service manuals on the Cub Cadet web site you can look at for free how in depth they are is unknown as it requires the serial # and this mower is currently not onsite... Information and advice is still welcomed and appreciated Thanks in advance.

The 2140 is a gear drive and not a hydro. These had issues with the clutches if they were operated like a hydro by riding the clutch pedal to vary the speed. I don't know what the fix is. I would have kept the 100 instead of buying a 2000 series tractor.

Can you trade it back and get your 100 back?

Guess I worded that wrong.
The 2140 was replaced with a Cub 100 and the old cub is what I use now. Found it on my local craigslist with a burned out starter generator for $180.00. And have been thoroughly amazed at its performance most recently with its ability to plow snow. Got about $450.00 in it so far and intend to continue to dial it in. My 100 apparently was pieced together with two tractors and has back fenders from a 70's model and a 12HP Kohler? Now I want the snow blower, the tiller, and disc attachments (new paint job would be nice) ).
Trying to fix the 2140 as a backup to cut grass so I can work on the 100 off and on. Thanks to these forums and the generosity of the members I Think I have found a new hobby. Wow so AGS is actually some kind of clutch setup then is that correct? Thx guys! |

Matt you were right!
That was all I needed to shoot my inquiries in the right direction. Apparently this AGS is a clutch system but the controls are similar to a Hydrostat transmission. When I bought this used at the local JD dealership the salesman assumed that this was hydrostatic and I operated it incorrectly for several seasons letting the clutch slip as I slowly circled trees in 5th or 6th gear pulling a trac vac while all along toasting my forward clutch and naturally never reading an operators manual. Their seems to be an argument over whether or not shimming this gets you more mileage out of the clutch as it isn't adjustable or replacing the disc and I haven't taken it far enough apart yet but I think I will try the shims first and follow up with a fresh disc if that does not work in my situation. Will post my results. Matt I enjoyed looking through your site especially your Cub 100 restoration.

I have heard that shimming it does work, or at least for awhile. If I were you, I'd fix and then sell it while it still works. I don't know how much work you have done on that engine, but if you don't already know, the parts are outrageously expensive. We had a 2145 (same thing with a hydro) that my dad bought thinking he'd replace his 382 LT with, but then decided not to after finding out what the engine parts cost.
Oh, and thanks for the compliments on my website! |

hey 4zero72. when you do your shim job could you maybe take some pics and tell us about the procedure? I have a 2140 that my dad gave me and I can tell that the clutch isnt the way it was back in the day. Probably becuase my brother and me used the mower the most when we were younger and didnt read the manual either. Mine still goes but I can tell its response is slower as well as the speed. I just havent had the time to try out the shims procedure yet, but Ive read several post in this and other forums saying how much they helped.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
