Cub Classics/Chris Westfall/Cub 129
Hey all,
Don't know if any of you saw my wanted ad this week, but here's the short story. A few days ago I pulled the driveshaft on my 129. I started to notice excessive vibration when mowing, and at idle. The previous owner had removed the drivehsaft pin, put in a 1/4" bolt that was too long to even tighten against anything. When I asked the previous owner if that was kosher he of course replied, "sure!". The result was a huge oblong hole in the driveshaft and another corresponding wear pattern in the coupler at the engine. I knew that it couldn't be right when I got the tractor but until now I was counting my blessings. Put it back in after a failed attempt at making a bushing to take up the slack, this time having welded the shaft to the engine coupler. No good. Ran for a half hour and then spun the coupler in two pieces. I use the 129 very heavily for mowing. I'm just starting a lawn care business and it's my main money maker, for now. I know I'm working it hard, so I take extra special care of it, to the degree that I am able with my meager income. So, here I was, with no way to mow the larger yards that actually pay well. Searched all over local places with no luck on a driveshaft. Called Chris Westfall of Cub Classics and he got back to me as soon as he got out of work. We set up an appointment the next day, and I made the hour and a half drive up there to get my parts. He spent a lot of time searching for a good used coupler, since his new ones hadn't arrived. He was determined to get me fixed up. He found his stock of new driveshafts that were machined by an aftermarket supplier (local friend of his I think), got me a new fan and snap ring, a replacement flex coupler, and gave it all to me for $54.00. It was a hot, nasty day, and we had both been working out in it all day before we met up. I know he didn't feel any more like being out in the yard sweating his cohones off looking for old Cub parts. But he did, and made sure I had what I needed to get things running again. I recommend him to anyone, and will definitely be dealing a lot with him in the future. Good prices, excellent service, prompt response, and just an all around good dude. My 129 finally has a hydro fan! And a sexy new driveshaft!

Yep, I have had a great experience with parts and ordering from him too, and have another order for all my 128 clutch parts I need going out to him soon. Glad you got her up and going.

Yeah, you almost feel betrayed when the Cub won't just fire up and get to work! Honestly, though, this is the first MAJOR repair that's left me without. Everything else has been playing catch-up from years of neglect on routine maintenance issues. I guess considering how many hours I've put on er, it's to be expected. From what I understand, driveshafts wearing out at the engine side is pretty common. That's part of the reason it took Chris a while to find a good coupler for me.

Great story!! Glad that you are up and running. One of my 129's needs a new driveshaft........so I may be headed Chris's way sometime soon, though with gas prices I might just pay shipping cost!!
