I got the steering box pulled out today. While getting it out I broke the u-bolt and the o-ring in the upper CV joint was messed up. Taking it apart I found the gasket holder is bent up, the cam follower has flat places on it, the upper plastic bearing guide was in several pieces in the grease and I only found 5 balls on the top bearing. I assume there should be 8 balls on the top bearing.

This morning I used the gas I had drained out of another mower to clean the cub steering parts. I went through the grease that came out of it and found the three missing balls. So now I'm just missing one cage on the bearings. I put all the loose parts in some diesel fuel. I did some reading and there seems to be conflicting opinions on whether the cage is necessary. I have rebuilt many older Jeep steering boxes over the years.. the older ones did not have bearing cages.. the balls just floated.. the newer boxes did have a flimsy plastic cage. I have been told all the cage did was make it easier to assemble.. I'm pretty sure you don't have to have the cage. I have bought stuff from that guy before.. everything fit and worked well Good luck with your project!

I went by an industrial supply house this morning to see if they had the o-ring for the Upper CV joint on the steering. They did have it but the guy said they had a $5 minimum order so I would have to buy 10. I put some grease in it and put it back together. I could have got the box out by just taking the bolt out of the shaft but I didn't know it at the time. O well it needed grease anyway. One of the back tires has been leaking so I put a tube in it. I'm still waiting on the follower pin I ordered on ebay to start putting the box back together. I'm planning on making the gasket, how thick should the material be?

I got the parts for my steering box yesterday and got it back in the 1641 today. It rained most of the day here so I didn't test drive it but it's got to be better than it was.
