Just a comment for those considering removing the balance gear from their motors. I removed the gear from this K321. I can't tell the difference in vibration. At least not from the 10 or 15 minutes it's been run.

Re-torqued the head last night as well.

Started fabrication of the new grill work and trying to figure out how to handle the headlight installation. Once that is complete, I'll move on to the hood painting and decals.

You are doing and EXCELLENT job! The front on this tractor is gonna be "key" on capturing the look/feel of the 1066. Also if you can, I would square up the top of the hood/front around the lights. Just my suggestion. Cant wait to see the finished product.

Yeah, at this point it just looks like a red 108. I agree the front/grill/hood will be the ticket.

I started cutting the flat bar stock to fab the grill insert. I'm a woodworker first, and kind of a novice at metal work. But I do have some tools and a decent welder, so I'll figure it out.

Dealing with the 1066-like hood contours is going to be a challenge. I'm not sure I'll be able to duplicate it. Have to noodle on that for a while. I have some ideas, though.

Meanwhile, I had to pull my other "worker" 108 into the shop to deal with an engine failure. So the 148R is on hold momentarily while urgent repairs are effected. You know, grass never sleeps. Well, not during the summer here.

Maybe a few layers of sheet metal over the hood to give the recessed look where the decals are on the hood? Also check out my post in the "homemade" forum! Ive been at it again!

Been a while since I've had a chance to work on the 148R. Had to pull the engine on my other 108 and get it overhauled. Put a spare (newer) K301 back in the 108 (128???) and put the 48 inch deck on it and it cuts like a dream. OK, back to the 148R!

Got some time to fab the grill insert and work on the headlight arrangement.

Not exactly as nice a fab job as I'd prefer, but my metal working skills aren't on par with my woodworking skills...

Slit the headlight surround and slid in a couple pieces of bar stock, then filleted them with some epoxy putty.

The grill is the same bar stock (3/16 by 1 inch) the frame is welded and the interior grill work I decided to braze together. this pic is just to check fit, but before I ground down all the welds and cleaned it up for primer and paint.

Got them both painted but forgot to take a final pic so these are work in progress. Had to cut the panel for headlights, too. got some paint on it in prep for the decal.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
