I decided to put the bearing plate on before painting the block. I measured the crank end play at .010. I'm going to put the piston/rod in sometime this week and then wait for nicer weather so I can paint the block.

Don't forget the end play on the camshaft.
Too loose and it will give you the "Kohler Knock Syndrome"

does anybody have a place to get shims that isnt 5 bucks each?

Cam shims?( balance gear shims will work i think) Bearing plate? I think i have a few extra. Since you will be powder coating now, how about ceramic coating. Can you do that? I have a set of headers i need done. Mike

Yes I was referring to cam shims, when I looked them up on parts tree there $5.50 each which seems pricey for what it is.

Cam end play should be .005-.010. I'd try for 1/2 way between.
and the cam pin only goes in one way, the same way it came out, Important!

You are doing a major overhaul on an engine! And you are worried about spending another $5??

McMaster Carr has 10 packs for less than $5 a pack.
