some more progress pics...wheel weights, three point hitch lower bracket, etc. Getting ready to weld up the cradle mod. will need to remove paint for the welds, of course. I'm using a spare oil pan as a jig to hold the engine rails in position.

replaced points on the engine, static timed it, adjusted valve lash (intake was way off). It's about ready to re-install. Might clean up the sheet metal and hit it with some black paint just because... I'd like to tighten up the dip stick tube, so that's something that I'll have to look at.

I'm going to use the less expensive after-market rubber bushings for the iso mounts. I don't think this little engine will stress the mounts much.

the fenders and frame were painted by the guy who sandblasted them using the sherwin williams paint I had mixed. The rear end I painted with spray cans. I had issues with this guy and his paint job--it was pretty bad--there are spots on the fenders where you can still see the primer, so I need to go back and repaint them. It's possible to get a nice shiny paint finish with spray cans with proper technique, I've used them for all my other restorations up to this point. After my experience with this painter, I'll go back to using them or find a way to spray my own paint.

I agree with good preparation and primer it's possible, I too use spray cans.

Back in the shop last night, got the cradle mod done, painted and installed. (note-I tack welded the brace in place before removing the oil pan jig. ) Worked on installing the driveshaft. It's a little disconcerting putting a crummy looking engine in such a nice frame. I keep telling myself it will be all covered up anyway! One pic shows the difference between the smaller stock clutch throwout arm and the midwestsupercub heavy duty arm (on the drive shaft).

In the remaining pics, I'm test fitting the drive shaft for length and proper clutch operation. Seems to work fine at this point, will need to mark and drill the hole in the shaft at the rear end (near the creeper gear) for the drive flange (not sure the correct name) that bolts through the flex joints. Once I mark that, I'll remove the drive shaft and drill and pin that flange/drive collar to the shaft then reinstall with a couple flex joints. I'm using a long punch as a pin to hold the clutch actuator arm in place for this test.

I understand now the purpose of that little ball in the drive collar pinned to the creeper--it's a thrust bearing for the clutch.
