So can I just use a balled flex hone to get some cross hatches on the wall, or should I spend the extra money and get a new piston and bore it .010 over?
if the bore don't look that bad I'd leave it since if you ball hone it and put new rings in it'll take a long time to seal up again. remember you still have a worn bore. a ball hone just follows the contour of the cylinder. now you have a out of shape bore with round rings. now myself I would worry about the rod.

The model and spec of this engine originally was built for TORO not Cub Cadet that is why it has the belt drive pulley on the flywheel side. I would only think someone mixed and matched parts. A hydro into the gear drive frame and an engine from another brand. That would explain the homemade driveshaft.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
