Well, if you can remove the head from the engine you want to buy, to check out the cylinder and how much piston ring you can see past the piston, the visual could be so bad as to not want to buy it after all. Since we don't know if we can hear it run or not. But then again, there are good folks who try to help.
My experience, is that if I know I have a engine on the shelf I can go to in an emergency, I will keep it. Had sold a guy a running aqs k301, so instead of using it, the rebuild went bad and so I had to refund the money. So, I know both ends of the spectrum here. I agree with the other members, that the k-series are excellent runners, even when worn out. Just take it easy if you do buy the k301, and don't wait for the snow to pile up to 3' before you decide to do some thing about it! I've had good luck with "off the shelf" engines, myself
