Here we pay sales tax on the purchase price when you transfer the title. When doing a private sale some sellers will leave the purchase price line on the title empty. You can enter your own price. Of course if you get caught that's a crime. They do check. If you get a car from family you can put gift on it and pay nothIng. Antique plates are $38 one time but the here are driving restrictions.

They screw you here in Georgia too. Your tag is due each year on or before your birthday and it is based on fair market value of the vehicle if it was purchased before 2013. If it was purchased after that you pay a 1 time fee based on FMV (I think around 7%) and then about $20/year for the tag.
When my MIL moved here from South Carolina with her 2016 Honda CRV she had to pay $1500 for her tag. She will then only pay around $20 a year for the tag each year after. My cars are all older and I pay each year around my birthday. I'm not sure of the total but I know my Harley tag runs a little over $90 a year. Before 2013 you didn't have to pay sales tax on a car if you purchased it from an individual but now they get you for 7% in tag fee's when you apply for the tag. It doesn't matter what you pay for the vehicle because they go off of FMV.

Our yearly plates go down each year of vehicle age. Farm trucks don't get a break anymore. The state figured out that people were registering 70k pickups for the flat rate of 50$.
You bring in a bill of sale to the courthouse and pay sales taxes on the amount you paid. So a vehicle gets taxed every time it changes hands. It's really annoying. I've paid 1000$ for every used vehicle I've bought. They don't look up what it's worth, just what you and the seller agreed on.

I know you said cars ,but my house is rated about what it would sell for. A cop down the street rated only 25k when it would sell at least 65-80k |

Talked to the tax office today. When a vehicle gets to be 35 years old, it is automatically considered an antique and therefore they use NADA values. So the real idiots are at NADA--I mean who in their right mind pays over 20K for a 38 year old 1 ton truck--plain jane, no 4wd, not diesel, not extended cab, not restored--thats the high limit, the LOW limit is around $3,500---to me that is way more than this truck would sell for--and its in good shape.
I was told to take lots of photos and send an email and we would go from there. Here we go.....

Wow. Some of you would really like Kansas. When a vehicle hits 35 yrs. old, you get an antique tag and never have to do anything with the tag again, just pay your taxes. My 71 International 1210 costs me $12.00 per year.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
