Learned that from my grandpa when I was just a pup! I was probably 10 years old when I first saw my grandpa do that to his deck on his 169, my uncle mows with that deck to this day and it still looks really nice. I oil my truck every year to, sure helps make them last a lot longer with all the salt in the winter.

I use a winterbeater. Keeps the carpet and iron oxide floor in my Jeep from rusting out some more. Of course, when there's a blizzard, the Jeep comes out to play! ...then the salt trucks come out.

without occasional care, a mower deck rots out in about 20 years (1980 WH tractor dad had when we grew up, he didn't really believe in maitenance of small engine equipment). THe deck on the thing had chunks of scrap bolted to it (no welder) and it looked terrible. It was given to me after the KT17 spit a rod inside the block and I ended up selling it to a guy who was involved in tractor pulling.

Most newer tractors with lighter decks will probably rust through faster... Deere and Simplicity (the bigger units at least) are still pretty darned sturdy.

I did go ahead and powdercoat my deck. Worst case scenario, I strongly slowed the accumulated pitting underneath, and around the top coverplate. It was sandblasted so clean, that previous damage I didn't know existed showed up. They even removed the S/N tag for me. There is a thread on here somewhere with pics of how well it turned out. I am very proud of it!
