Still having problems...
I took the carb back apart and cleaned everything. In the midst of doing that I lost the needle valve and the small wire pivot device that the float hinges on. Had to order both parts ($37.00 believe it or not). Also replaced the fuel line from the filter to the carb as well as replacing the filter. I did not have enough line to go back to the tank. Re-assembled everything and it still is doing the same thing. One thing I will mention again is that when all of this started I replaced the plugs with new Champions and the mower ran great for a few minutes and then started missing and backfiring again. Someone earlier in this thread suggested going with Autolite. Is this worth doing at this point or is everyone convinced that it is a fuel issue?

Just thought of one more possibility. Any chance mice built a nest in the blower housing over the winter? Mice seem to love blower housings and they like to eat wires. I worked on a 2165 that the little buggers ate through the plug wire. Engine ran on one cylinder and it made me crazy till I pulled the engine and found the damage. They also ate one of the wires to the brake switch. Did I mention that I hate mice.

Problem solved
After exhausting everything I could do I was forced to take my mower to the local repair shop. The problem was a bad magneto. It was only firing on one cylinder. Thanks to everyone for your help.
