It does take a few seconds to power down. I tried feathering the throttle; helps minimally, but didn't try the choke.
Well, now that I've tried to replace the coil with one I can't get to fit, there's no chance of it even starting at all. I'm hoping I can resolve this before the grass starts growing in three months.
Would I be better off just finding a new engine I can just drop in? Would probably be cheaper than what I've already spent refurbishing the deck!

Where are you located in Central PA? I am in State College and could take a look at it. I have a 282 and recently found a NOS Shortblock for it and it runs perfect! Feel free to PM me.

Put the old coil back on. Make sure you get the pos. and neg. terminals hooked up correctly. Bad coil is a low probability failure point.

Have you removed and cleaned the carb? That's the first thing to do. Drain all the fuel from the tank and remove the fuel valve from the tank. Clean the tank. Clean the carb and all the passages and jets. Re-assemble with a new fuel line and I bet she'll come to life. Check the engine manual for setting the jets on the carb. Wouldn't hurt to run some fine sandpaper between the points while you are at it.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
