if the wire from the neg side of the coil is hooked up and the points are closed . yes it would. and it would be real close to the reading you would get going from + to - at the coil.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I'll be too busy to mess with the cub for a few days, but I did have 10 minutes last night. So I tried the throttle cable idea (increase tension on the spring) since that would be a quick experiment. I think this did help. Of course, as soon I tried a quick mow, the belt jumped off the deck, laid up on the muffler and burnt itself )-: So nothing definitive but before the belt jumped the mower clearly spun up the blades faster than it did before. I had to stop at that point.

I'll keep everyone informed. The belt did not burn through so I'll investigate this approach more the next time I have two minutes to rub together.

Thank for your patience during the hiatus. Got some time to work on the cub and here is what I found:

1 - Put in a known good coil and plug - no change.
2 - Went back over governor linkage and again - this seems to mask the problem a little but I have a very high idle and it does not solve the problem.
3 - Adjusted the carb again. Found the idle screw was off my previous adjustment because the spring broke. Fixed that but in the end - no change.(no change in idle either- which is weird).
4 - Static timed the engine. Wouldn't start and kicked back during start so ignition was to far advanced. Resulting points gap was .024" - too much.
5 - Timed using points gap method only. Runs great again, but once again - no power under load.

I am beginning to suspect the carb - high speed jets plugged or something. Any ideas?

as I mentioned in an earlier post, I'd be looking at the fuel supply. sediment bowl clean? petcock open all the way? good flow of fuel , carb clean? you may want to check around the head area for a leaking head gasket. often times after rebuilds people don't retorque the head after running the engine for a while.

Just a thought but maybe you have water in the gas. That will give the same symptoms.

OK, runs great now. Of course, out of desperation I tweaked 2 or 3 things, so I am not sure what fixed it:

Went to .022 timing gap. Going with .020" yields no power, while static timing with the ohmmeter yields a .024 gap and was advanced so far it would kick back on starting. So I decided to split the difference.
Adjusted throttle cable yet one more time. I did have to move it, like the cable slipped through its retainer
Changed governor spring down one hole on throttle cable plate/arm


So either a water bubble cleared from a jet, or throttle cable is my guess.

Either way I am happy!
