Did you verify that the length of the belt is what is listed on the packaging? Wouldn't be the first belt that got put back in the wrong sleeve.

It is a half inch. Did not notice that, that could be it.

This is the one I'm using:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I'll have to get a 3/8 one and see if that will help. I'm hesitant to go down from 81" to 80" on the 3/8 inch like the recommended part is. Do you think it would really make that big of a difference?

Looks like this is the one I am supposed to have from other posts in this thread:

It ALWAYS pays to have the correct parts.

Picked up the IH-490489-R2 from my local dealer on my lunch break today (they've had a surprising amount of parts for my 105). Now to put it on after work and see if it works.

Need to mow the lawn again in a couple days, hoping I'll be riding rather than push mowing.

Finally got it working with the cub cadet belt.

It was still way more difficult to get on then it seems like it should have based on everything I have watch/read. I have the nut on the tensioner pulley on just far enough to be grabbing threads on the whole nut. I did measure the distance on the pulley with the spring and got 3.5" though, so I guess it must be right.

What I ended up doing was unlatching the rear of the deck from the scissor mount. Then I moved the deck forward a little for some more slack, got the belt mounted correctly. After that I got one side of the deck mounted pretty easily, then just used the size of the deck to lever the other side in and then I was all set.

Ran it around the yard a little last night. Clutch engaged and disengaged well a bunch of times, so everything seems to be working well. It definitely covers a lot more ground than the 20" push mower I was using.

MAYBE.......someone changed the Mule Drive Pulleys to something other than Cub Cadet, and they are larger in Diameter than OEM.

if all is correct, you should be able to have the belt on/in all pulleys except the deck pulley.
From left side of tractor with left hand guiding belt onto deck pulley, pull the deck belt towards you with your right hand.
Belt will roll onto and down into the deck pulley.
No un-tensioning or re-tensioning nor anything unattached or reattached in the process.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
