Oak,
I tried everything, but I had to remove the screen to get the wing nut out. The problem I am having is getting the screen, spacers, screen ring, and washers all set up and put back together. As soon as I get everything in place, I am having a hard time getting the screws/bolts started. At some point, one of the spacers falls, and I have to restart the whole process. What makes it worse then is the spacer falls through the fan and down in the blower housing. Then it is a pain in the a$$ to get as the spacers are not able to be retrieved with a magnet as it is made of aluminum. I will never take the screen off again. When servicing air cleaner I will push sponge pieces in the holes before working or replacing filter then remove sponges afterwards. This problem would have been easy if there was a door of some kind in the bottom part of the blower housing. I may look to do this in the future to make it easier to clean out. What do you guys think about a blower door on the bottom of housing?

I see the pic, and I went and looked at a motor. I will admit, I've never tried doing what you are doing with the motor in a tractor, but I really don't see why it's so hard. Looks like you just put the fan up and start one bolt, then the rest should be easy. Are you trying to put all the bolts in at the same time? If so, do it one at a time. Maybe I'm missing something.......

I think you gave the best advice in post #7.

I took one Kohler Command apart just to check for seal leaks. No seal leaks but about a third of the fins were broken off the cooling fan and all three wires from the stator were broken.

The culprit? A rodent had carried a few nuts in there. Just about the size of a wing nut.

One of the issues is your dealing with the duct work and that looks like an accordion. To me pull the hood (4 bolts) remove the muffler (3 nuts they can be a PITA) and the 4 bolts that hold the engine in place.

The problem is keeping the spacers in place while holding the screen ring and screen in place while in tight conditions. I fear an engine pull may be necessary. God, bring on the beer.

Seems to me, you might welcome a reason to have a cold drink or two. Or three!
