Sure, some will say they've had a Series I in their tractor forever and have had NO issues. I'll be the first to say "That's fantastic!!!" I on the other hand don't need to take the chance of having "catastrophic engine failure". As I mentioned in a previous post I just don't need another tractor that bad. Kenneth |

The KT lubrication system is best viewed this way....
There are guys that cry that the Series I is no good. I have a friend that has a 682 w/ the original KT-17 Series I in it ......NO Problems. He does have a flat lawn and he keeps good care of his motor with regular maintenance.

They really are not THAT bad, they just get a bad rap because the lubrication system is less than ideal, and inferior to the KT-17II and M18.
I have had 3 blown Series I engines...all 3 were run too low on oil. Proper maintenance is key... |

Yeah,
I have to agree with Matt G. I looked around for a nice 782 with a series II engine without much luck. Found a super nice original 782 with a series I. This thing runs like a beast and doesn't miss a beat. The PO didn't use it on his ditches and specifically told me not to use it on sloped surfaces. This was coming from a non-collector. I plan to keep it full of oil and serviced correctly and hope it lasts for another thirty years............. The pics of the 682 you posted in the ad make it look to be in pretty decent shape other than around the headlights. Pics can be deceiving though. Keep looking and something will surface for you. Good luck.

I had a few with the Series I and both lasted well over 1000 hrs. Like Matt said proper servicing is the key. I would not be afraid of getting one with the Series I if I could confirm it was well taken care of but then again that's always a risk with anything.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
