If the price is acceptable to you, go test drive it. Listen to it run, check for oil around the pan and drop axles. Check in the tell-tale crack area between the lower radiator and the engine block (the ear on the lower right of the engine is a structural member to connect the front bolster to the engine--notorious for cracking there).
Judge whether you'll need tires soon; prices vary, but you can price a pair of 4.00x12 for the front and a pair of 8.3x24 or 9.5x24 for the rear. Also remember to price tubes. Run it for a minimum of 15 minutes to see if the coil will overheat and shut down the engine and/or if the fuel system is clear and unobstructed. Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
