Just remove the spring on the motor and "tweak" it a bit. What do you have to lose? I've done it.

and small, nimble fingers. I got the old spring off, but can't get it back over the post--even using a dental pick. I will have to try some more. I want this engine to run, again. No smoke, oil stays clean, runs and idles well--too nice to go through a complete rebuild. I may just get a gasket set, and tear it apart so I can attend to the spring on the bench.
I think I will switch my focus to the 782. It suddenly developed a large oil leak that seems to be behind the sheet metal on the hydro side of the engine. If I pull the engine bolts, is there room to slide the engine forward and remove the sheet metal?

Tie a thread to it in case it gets away, you can retrieve it. Snip off the thread when finished.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
