The strange thing about the IH Mower Decks, it is a very confusing section for me. There were 3 generation of the 38, 42, & 48 inch decks but the model numbers were all the same. You have to determine the right deck by image. At least that is the way I see it. All other implements, seem to follow a specific model number (ie: QA-36 QA36A, etc)
Good info there. I didn't know there were three versions. I guess what I was trying to say is that I did not think there was a manual available to customers or the public in general to have and use that showed part numbers. All I had ever seen was the big book that the dealer had in the parts department.
That is why I love this forum, learning so much more about these cubs. Unfortunately I usually end up asking or saying things that may not be correct and have to be schooled. But I have been like that all my life... LOL!!!!

The CPE-2 is not on the Web that I know of. I found one years ago, and bought it.

BUT....I believe you can find the same information by going to the Cub Cadet online parts lookup. Type in a model number. Once that pops up, click on the attachments for that model. One should find mower decks under that section. NOW, the hiccup comes when one is trying to find the parts on a 42" deck that is used on a Quietline Series tractor. The online selection, only provides attachment information on the implements that was offered for that series (the 42" was not). One would have to figure out which series of Cubs that the 42" deck was used on, then go to that model. YUP...it is confusing.

So the metal tag, affixed to the mower deck with rivets, that says "Identification Number 421U-1112" isn't the way to id it.

The 42 in the ID lets you know the cutting width. But there are decks that have to be pinned on or bolted on and then there are decks that can be put on with what is called a Quick Attach that is a much faster way of putting the deck on. Some decks had cast iron ends and front and others were heavy guage stamped steel. There are decks for Narrow Frame mowers and then there are decks for Wide Frame mowers.

Here is what I found at Partstree.com
The pulleys are the same for the early deck and the second gen deck according to their part numbers.

I am parting out a mower deck off a 125, it bears the same identification number as Fill's except the last number is 3 instead of 2....you suppose that could have something to do with what generation mower deck they are? I got the deck I have with a 125, but actually have no idea it was the original one sold with the tractor or it came from something a lot newer.

Just thinking aloud again....thinking it was odd that the id numbers only differed in that reqard.

According to the parts list online, there are 3 generations of a 42" deck. I am betting his is a #2 and you have a #3. Also according to the list, all the outer pulleys are the same and the center pulley is the same number. So looks like all pulleys are the same no matter the generation.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
