Putting the filter in the return line should not change anything as far as performance, it is just a filter.
Hopefully you have a bit of air in the system and it will work out.
Do remember you are in colder temps and
it affects the oil's ability to flow.
If possible, have it inside where it is warmer.
Do not use tractor fluid "303" in anything in lower temps.
Many complain using it in winter, some larger tractors/construction equip refuse to operate with it, as it is just too thick.

I am using Hy-Tran in my DanCo 2149 mounted on a Restored 149.
After the initial purge when 1st assembled after restoration, No issues at all with performance and/or foaming.
It will be slow when started in cold temps no matter what oil you use.
The filter on a 2149 is mounted to the valve body.

...and is there a vent on your fluid reservoir?

I'm running a filter on the suction of my Kwik Way loader with the cheap TSC oil with no issues. As others have asked, what is your pump and suction line size?

The vent is a tiny hole in the filler plug located on top of the RH upright where the valve body is located

Suction line size is 1/2" and the pump suction side is JIC-8. I did find an issue where I had trapped some air in the system so I added a vent to let the reservoir breathe.

I am waiting on some hydraulic fittings before I can put the oil back in and see how she runs.

I wanted to get this done and running before snow, but, as any of you in the northeast know right now... rain is about all we can get

I have set of PF Engineering loader plans. PF Engineering is calling out 3/4 inch (-12) fittings on the suction side. They also recommend a pump with an 4 to 8 GPM.

This might be an area to look at. If my memory is working right a suction filter and high pressure filter are different.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
