I believe later rods went from bolts to nuts. The fact that both nuts are different is odd. Perhaps it’s an aftermarket rod. Personally for the nominal cost of a new rod, and since they are aluminum (which has a finite fatigue life), I would replace it regardless. I bought a NOS Kohler rod for less than $30 through eBay.

Yeah guys I hear ya. I’m buying a new piston and rod. Cheap insurance. I appreciate all the input and help. The teardown is going pretty smooth. Norman at isavetractors sent me a playlist on YouTube of him tearing down and rebuilding a K301. I made my own valve spring compressor because nobody around here had one for an L-head Kohler.

I got my block stripped all the way down this evening. Time for the machine shop. I found a neat trick on gardentractorpullingtips on my worn cam lobe for the points push rod. They sell a push rod that is flared on the end that rides on the cam where it isn’t worn. They also have instructions on how to thread your existing aluminum rod and install a 10-32 stainless steel nut on the end that rides on the cam. I have a tap and die set, but not a way to precisely cut threads perpendicular to the shaft.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
