The dividers underneath are still in place and in good shape
the only thing missing from it is the downward diverter piece on the output chute, need to get around to making on out of some scrap metal

Default Deck Blades

The first thing that comes to mind is that the blades are not the correct length for the 44a deck. The blades should nearly touch one another with a slight gap between them to cut correctly.

More often than not, this problem occurs with aftermarket blades that are generic, to fit a variety of mowers. Check the gap between the blades to be sure the blades you have are indeed the correct set. I believe the blades for the 44a deck are 15.12 (15 1/8) inches long.

To be sure, research the Cub Cadet model number for your deck with the correct vintage to determine the blade set you should be using.

Default new blades, nice cut

An update- I purchased the inexpensive blade set mentioned by SamMac They are XHT brand. Black, basically rectangular and thicker than my originals.

The cutting quality of the deck has improved GREATLY.

I am guessing that my annual sharpening was helpful, but the loss in blade width, or my rounded blade corners were causing poor performance. The deck also seems to blow harder on exit now. Thanks everyone for your input

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
