I don't think it is an air gap issue.
AS A TEST do as you wish with the jumper, if it works properly then replace the
switch with a new one, as the last thing you want to do is fall off your mower and have it give you a
free haircut.

The seat switch is in the circuit for both the PTO Start and Run positions on the PTO switch. If the PTO runs in the Start position, the seat switch is working.

I looked at the wiring diagrams again. This could also be caused by a bad reverse relay or switch. The PTO will start even if you are not seated on the tractor. Kind of strange, but I tested and confirmed this. It will not stay running if you move the PTO switch to run when not in the seat.
Or it could be the PTO switch itself.

The latching relay setup on these tractors screws people up, but once you wrap your head around it, they are actually pretty simple controls.

We did a video series on the Cyclops wiring system - here is the PTO section. It may help you diagnose the issue and familiarize yourself with operation. Video was taken on an 1882, but the PTO controls are the same. Link below:

Default 1862 PTO Switch

Thanks to all that responded. This is what makes this Forum so great. Well I tinked with the seat switches and decided they were working properly. The reverse switch had been bypassed by the previous owner. I took the tape off where it was bypassed and pushed on the wires to make sure they were tight. Put seat back on, put battery back, and fired the tractor up. Lo and behold the PTO Switch worked. This morning I took the tractor out and mowed my neighbors yard. Mowing deck made a humming sound. Another thing to sort out. First work I have done since being diagnosed with Heart Failure a few weeks ago. Got a headache and a little heart pain after I sat down to rest. Did not last long. So much about me. Thanks to all that responded and have a great day.

the deck noise in my opinion is most likley one of the idle pulleys. they are easiest to check and in my experience the first to go. they are not greaseable. they tend to rust when they sat unused for a while.
of course greasing the spindles never hurts.

spndncash. I put a new pto to deck belt on the tractor. That is when the noise began. I have the adjustment as loose as possible and it is still really tight. This 1862 has a 6" pto and the 44" gt deck has a 4 or a 4 1/2" 1/2 pulley. The belt I bought is 93". The only other belt that I found was a 93 1/2" belt. I feel this would still be too short. Anyone have an 1862 with a 6" pto and a 44" gt deck with a 4" or a 4 1/2 " pulley that can give me the size and number belt I need. All help appreciated and have a great day.

I thought I remembered this similar discussion from few years back. Roland mentions in an post from then: "Looks like this is one of those Cub Cadet Proprietary Parts situations. The correct belt is 954-3023 that is 21/32" x 93-1/8".

Using aftermarket Section B belts may and probably won't work." I have run into this with my ZTR's. the cub cadet belt is the only one that fits. I have had durability issues with other brands as well. I now they are expensive but sometimes you have to use the CC belt.

You have the wrong combo for the PTO / Deck pulley. They should be the same size. Your deck is running a lot faster then it should. You are stuck having to use a custom size belt, since Cub never meant for the combination you have to be used.

What is the serial number on the 1862? There were two versions of the machine. If you have the larger PTO pulley, it's probably the later model. It does show up as a 93.13" B-Section belt.

What is the model of 44" deck (there are two that were used in that era), 190-318-100 and 190-358-100.

The Cyclops era tractor with the change in lift links, mule drives, PTO clutches, and front axles caused the need for some changes to be made depending on the unit to fit the full line of decks.

A picture of the new belt installed would also be helpful. A look at the mule drive and deck pulley would be great.
