The manual doesn’t include the part the drives the deck Ironman. It just includes the bare motor from Kohler. Would that be the mule drive? Or PTO? Or what? Thanks anyways as it’ll be helpful in the near future of the rebuild. How do I remove the end of the motor shown in the picture. Not knowing what I was doing, I originally tried turning out the 3 screws, but they just spin and I don’t even know what removing them would do. Then I found Allen head screws/bolts in the holes that I circled in red. However, I sprayed them a couple times in a 24 hour period and they are still stuck… So basically I need help with removing this end of the motor that runs the belts/deck.

The Allen head screws you refer to will need to be super clean so
your wrench fits perfectly. After your soaking you will find there are 2 set screws in each whole, these hold the PTO to the bearing. Once you get the PTO off you will see the set screws for the bearing and the pulley. All this will take quite a bit of tapping and such to get off. Thanks. That manual does do a good job of explaining. I’ll have to clean the set screws more and I do have a 3 jaw puller.

There comes a time for all of us, to Read The Fine Manual.
You've got some knowledgeable coaches but you'll likely not need them as much after a quick trip to the documentation It would be great if you could post some pics along the way. I'll be heading into this project pretty soon myself. How's it going? John

What you're working on is the PTO assembly at the moment. Those set screws can be tough to get out. Use a high quality US made allen wrench. One thing I've done that has been helpful, is to get a long thin punch that will fit IN the bottom of the hex recess (not touching the flat sides) and give it a good whack or two , in order to loosen the interface between the housing and the allen screws. Then follow with some Kroil or PBlaster This has worked for me. As others have pointed out, there should be TWO Hex screws in there, so you'll get good at this. Above all, don't twist off the flats or snap a wrench in the set screw. Impact and penetrating fluid have always done it for me (and above all, patience!) You got this. It will just take some patience (and quality hex tools!)

Reminiscent of years past, after the kids were in bed and too much mind expanding Christmas Eve ,
I would attempt to assemble their gifts without reading the assembly instructions (who needs them?). Then in the , I'd read the instructions and do it again. |

Got the piston out and 3 of the set screws from the PTO clutch. The screw that’s in the hole that I circled in red is soaking in PBlaster.

I now have all 6 set screws out, but this last one that I circled the hole for in red is still tight. Sprayed with PBlaster last night and now again.

If the six set screws you have out are all out of the PTO clutch
(there should be three pointed ones and three flat ones) then the PTO clutch should pull off. There is nothing else left holding it on except probably rust. Then you will have better access to the set screws (two of them) holding the basket pulley on as seen above in West Valley G's pic shown in post #12. |
